Online Archive of California

    • The OAC provides free public access to detailed descriptions of primary source collections (artwork, manuscripts, papers, historic photographs, and so on) maintained by more than 200 libraries, special collections, archives, historical societies, and museums throughout California — including collections maintained by the 10 University of California (UC) campuses. The OAC is a core component of the University of California California Digital Library (CDL) and is administered by the Digital Special Collections program.

California Digital Newspaper Collection

    • The California Digital Newspaper Collection contains over 400,000 pages of significant historical California newspapers published from 1846-1922, including the first California newspaper, the Californian, and the first daily California newspaper, the Daily Alta California. It also contains issues of several current California newspapers that are part of a pilot project to preserve and provide access to contemporary papers.

Calisphere

    • Calisphere is the University of California free public gateway to a world of primary sources. More than 200,000 digitized items — including photographs, documents, newspaper pages, political cartoons, works of art, diaries, transcribed oral histories, advertising, and other unique cultural artifacts — reveal the diverse history and culture of California and its role in national and world history.

 Driver Education Program

    • Includes 11 car practice tests, 6 motorcycle practice tests, 3 CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) practice tests, 3 online driver’s manuals (car, motorcycle, CDL), and a FAQ section with detailed answers to 100+ DMV-related questions.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

ILL is no longer available. However, Zip Books can be used for book requests which are funded by a California State Library grant and become part of our collection.

LAW LIBRARY

We have lay-person level materials in our law libraries at the Bridgeport and Mammoth Lakes Branches. Check with your library staff on how to use the books and online resources.  See the Law Library section under the "Programs" tab above.

LIBRARY CARDS

The Mono County Library System offers several types of library cards. Permanent cards are offered to residents of one year (or more) of Mono County, persons who own property, are employed by Mono County, or who have students enrolled in a Mono County school. We also offer these cards to holders of Mountain Valley area library cards. Temporary cards are offered to new residents of the county upon completion of necessary paperwork. COMPUTERS

All branches in the Mono County Library System provide access to the internet and word processing. Research may be done at no charge.  In all branches, copies made from computer-printers are $.10/page, $.05/page for Friends of the Library members.

PHOTOCOPIES

Photocopies may be made at any Mono County Library for a fee.  For current Friends of the Library members the fee is $.05/page and $.10/page for all others. Some branches offer duplex printing at $.20 per page.

SCANS

Library staff can scan and email PDF documents to an email account for $1.00 per page.

FAX

The Library does not provide faxing service at any of our locations.  However there are online web-based fax service providers that will take a scan or file upload and convert it into a fax delivery on your behalf.  While some provide a level of free service, these are largely providers that charge fror this service.  Below is a select list of online faxing resources.  You can access these from your device or computer as well as public library computers or library laptops.  The Library does not recommend any of these over the others, nor is it liable for your transaction with their service:

TYPEWRITERS

Typewriters are available for use at Brideport, Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes and Benton branches at no charge.

Internet Use Rules and Guidelines

The Internet links this computer with information resources around the world. The Mono County Library computers are available to all library patrons. In defining the Internet’s resources as an extension of the library, we subscribe to the Library Bill of Rights, which states that "A person’s right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background or views."

The library staff does not monitor the information obtained on these computers. It is the responsibility of parents to monitor the computer use of their minor children.

Library Internet users are expected to act in a responsible, ethical, and legal manner, in accordance with the following rules for Internet use at this library, the missions and purposes of the other networks they use on the Internet, and the laws of California and the United States.

Access to the Mono County Internet workstations is a privilege offered to any library user who follows these rules:

  • Computer time is on a first come first served basis. All users agree to pay any charges prior to leaving the library. Time limits may apply.  .
  • In some libraries within our county, there may be a charge for word processing or email access. Internet research is free in all locations. For all computer services, there is a cost of $.10 per sheet for printing.
  • The Internet may not be used for Internet Relay Chat (IRC), chat rooms, listserv, bulletin board service, or to play games.
  • The user will not "bookmark" sites to the library’s computer. You may save a bookmark file on your own diskette and use this during your library session.
  • The Internet user is held responsible for his or her own actions and activities on the Internet. Unacceptable uses of the network will result in the suspension or revoking of these privileges.
  • Vandalism will result in the cancelation of all computer privileges. Vandalism includes transferring, downloading, uploading files or computer viruses. Vandalism also includes creating computer viruses and/or taking any malicious action to attempt to harm or destroy the property or school/library materials or the data of another user.
  • The Mono County Library is a participant in the InfoPeople Project, which provides points of public access to the Internet at public library sites throughout California. InfoPeople is supported by a Federal Library Services and Construction Act grant administered in California by the California State Librarian. All computers have been provided through funds donated by the Mono County Friends of the Library, through the Gates Foundation, through the California State Library, or by the Mono County Office of Education/Library. We reserve the right to revoke computer privileges for unacceptable use as defined above.

I agree to abide by the rules and guidelines specified herein. In addition, I realize that the Mono County Library does not have control of the information on the Internet. Sites accessible via the Internet may contain material that is illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people. I recognize that the Library’s intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, but that it does not monitor the information of any Internet patron while using the computer.

The specific conditions and services being offered will change from time to time. I will be responsible for any charges, fines or fees incurred as the result of using the Library’s Internet service. I accept responsibility for using this equipment in the manner outlined above.

The Mono County Library makes no warranties with respect to Internet service, and it specifically assumes no responsibility for:

  • The content or any advice or information received by an Internet user from a source outside Mono County, or any costs or charges incurred as a result of seeing or accepting such advice or information;
  • Any costs, liability, or damages caused by the way the Internet user chooses to use his or her access to the Internet;
  • Any consequences of service interruptions or changes even if these disruptions arise from circumstances under the control of a Mono County Branch Library.

Mono County Board of Education Gift Library Materials

GIFT LIBRARY MATERIALS

A. LIBRARY MATERIALS
  1. Library materials include but are not limited to hardback and paperback books, microforms, pamphlets, brochures, magazines, recordings, films, filmstrips, cassettes, etc.
  2. Library materials also include paintings, sculptures, mounted specimen, artifacts, etc.
B. CONDITIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF LIBRARY MATERIALS
  1. The President of the Mono County Friends of the Library shall be a regular member of the committee.
  2. The materials must be an outright gift.
  3. Materials not useful to one branch may be disposed if by the Friends of the Library or returned to the donor if so stipulated at the time the gift is made.
  4. Materials not useful to one branch may be transferred to another branch or donated to local institutions such as hospitals, youth camps, jails, etc.
C. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
  1. All library gift materials for the Mono County Library System be deposited with the local chapter of the Friends of the Library or the Mono County Chapter of the Friends of the Library.
  2. Title to all materials shall remain with the Friends of the Library until materials are transferred to the Mono County Library System, or otherwise disposed of.
  3. The Friends of the Library shall provide each donor with a letter acknowledging the number and type of items given to them for the library. The letter shall be prepared according to the Internal Revenue Service specifications.
  4. Records shall be maintained of the number and types of gift library materials for which no donor is identified.
D. TRANSFER OF GIFT LIBRARY MATERIALS TO COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM
  1. The local branch librarian, or librarian in charge, shall evaluate the gift materials and, with the approval of the county librarian, select those materials suitable for addition to the branch library collection.
  2. The county librarian shall evaluate the balance of the materials, and with the assistance of the branch librarians, select materials suitable for other branch libraries.
  3. Paperback books shall be evaluated and selected by the branch librarians for addition to their “Bring One, Take One” collections.
  4. All materials not added to the county library system shall be sold, or otherwise disposed of by the Friends of the Library.
E. MATERIALS ADDED TO THE COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM

Lists of gift library materials to be cataloged and added to the Mono County Library System shall be prepared and presented to the Mono County Library Authority for approval.
